Rustic Farmhouse Table
Our close friends were renovating their home on an upstate lake. Their kitchen required a custom table. It was decided to use quartersawn white oak. I ordered 45 bd ft of 5/4 for the top and 50 bd ft of 8/4 for the leg structure. My benchtop planer and 6 ft joiner were no match for the length and weight of the material. Consequently we went “old school” and hand planed and joined the boards for the top. We utilized mortise and tenon construction throughout the table. Once the major pieces were made I finished the construction in my garage (much to the dismay of my 1964 Chevy).
We chose to add a very light whitewash to enhance the rustic look and finished the table with a gel topcoat. We hope it serves their family and friends for many years to come.
